Koson studied Japanese-style painting under Suzuki Kason, who excelled in flower-and-bird portraits. Then, under Ernest Fenollosa, he painted flower-and-bird pictures under the name of "Koson" and exhibited his works at the Kyoshin-kai. Later, around 1905, he began to produce flowers-and-birds Ukiyo-e. His painting name was "Kozon" in the Meiji period, "Shoson" at Watanabe Print Shop, and "Hoson" at Kawaguchi.\r\n
Koson has produced over 500 works, but since his release, he has been very popular in Europe and the United States and wasn't a well-known painter in Japan. However, in recent years, exhibitions have eventually been held in Japan, and there is growing momentum for reevaluation.\r\n

This artwork is the collaborative artwork of Kunisada II, who painted the beauty, and Kyosai, who painted the scenery. The contrast between the beauty's thin lines and the strong brushwork in the background is interesting.\r\n

Toyonobu was the grandson of Toyokuni Ⅲ and produced mainly actors and warriors works. In particular, the "Shinsen Taiko-ki" (Newly Selected Biography of Taiko Hideyoshi) series is cited as his best-known work.\r\n
Taiko-ki is a biographical story about the exploits of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the former shogun. In the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate forbade depicting Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Ukiyo-e prints because they thought depicting the former shogun would disturb public morals. That series is a typical Meiji-era Ukiyoe series, using vivid Western red pigments and showing the actual person with true names.\r\n

This piece depicts a beautiful woman with Osuberakashi hair in the main picture and the Imperial Palace in the upper picture.\r\n
From the Iwaida-Cho Police Station, we can still see the Niju-Bashi Bridge and the Fushimi-yagura in the same composition as this work.\r\n
            \r\n
This is the series whose motifs are hairstyles and fashions of beauties from Kemmu-Era to Meiji-Era.\r\n
We can see the itinerant of the beauties, which covers over 500 years.\r\n
On the upper side of the prints are depictions of culture, entertainment, events, and occupations, which are also interesting.\r\n
            \r\n
Chikanobu used to use the name YoshitsuruⅡ. He became a pupil of ToyokuniⅡafter Kuniyoshi died, and after ToyokuniⅢ died, he became a pupil of Kunichika. Then, finally, his name became Chikanobu.\r\n
He was famous for the motif of beautiful woman. However, one of the seeds that grew into a flowering of his artistic life was the warrior and war prints of the Seinan War. After that, he started creating the artworks of Ooku, the shogun's harem, and the lady portrait in the civilization of the Meiji era. It raised his reputation. People have called his artworks "The second Edo Ukiyo-e," and he was one of the most famous artists.\r\n

Sato Masakiyo, who often appears in Ukiyo-e, is the same person as Kato Kiyomasa. So why are different names used?\r\n
            \r\n
The reason is that in the first year of Bunka (Bunka era), the Edo shogunate issued the "Proclamation of Bunka era." This proclamation prohibited depicting the Tokugawa family and other feudal lords of the Tensho period until the Meiji period.\r\n
The "Tensho period" refers to the Azuchi-Momoyama period during the reign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.\r\n
The Edo shogunate, under the Tokugawa government, issued this ban to curb the popularity of Toyotomi Hideyoshi to maintain public order.\r\n
            \r\n
Kunichika pioneered the triptych of actor Ukiyo-e and is one of the essential Ukiyo-e artists who depicted the kabuki actors. Since he left various kabuki prints, these are also worth in the study field of kabuki play archives.\r\n
His character was sometimes described as odd, not only by others but also by himself. For instance, he had changed houses and wives many times. He had altered houses 117 times.\r\n
He said. "My painting is not as good as Hokusai's, however, I'm superior to Hokusai in the number of times of moving houses."\r\n
He had married over 40 women, and it had never lasted.\r\n
He loves alcohol and women, and he spends money wastefully, and there is an episode that he had to borrow clothes from the publisher for the work of sketching the kabuki actors.\r\n
He was also a merciful person, so he couldn't ignore if someone needed help. He sometimes gave something prepared for the guests to someone else.\r\n
