Although Kuchi-e was produced as an appendix to the book, the quality is very high, and the delicate lines are no less than those of ukiyo-e.
Toshikata was a follower of Yoshitoshi and was nominated as the successor of the family. Toshikata developed his own unique style of genre painting with gentle elegance.
He became a popular illustrator at the Bungei Club, where he painted 52 illustrations in 13 years, and also contributed illustrations to many books of literary novels.
