松島局の悲しい物語を描いた作品。
松島局は、はじめ和田義盛の三男義秀の妻になる予定であったが、かねてより局に恋をしていた執権義時の次男朝時がそれに憤り、尼将軍政子に内訴してしまう。
政子は朝時の胸を察し、密かに朝時に松島を与えようとしていたが、松島は他に嫁げば先に約束をした義秀への不貞となり、一方政子に背けば不忠であるとして、思い悩んだ末、ついに婦道を守ろうと自死を選ぶのであった。

芳年（天保10-明治25年）は、幕末から明治前期にかけて活動した浮世絵師。
多種多様な浮世絵を手がけ、各分野において独特の画風を見せる。明治期において最も成功した浮世絵師であり、門下からは日本画や洋画で活躍する画家を多く輩出した芳年は、「最後の浮世絵師」と評価されることもある。また、芳年は芥川龍之介、谷崎潤一郎、三島由紀夫、江戸川乱歩など、文人たちにも愛された。
精神を病みながら創作をつづけた芳年の鬼気迫る芳年の情念がこもった究極の美は、世界中で人気が高い。

This work depicts the sad story of Matsushima-no-Tsubone.
Matsushima-no-Tsubone was initially promised to be the wife of Yoshihide, the third son of Wada Yoshimori, but Yoshitoki's second son Tomotoki, who had been in love with Matsushima resented this and appealed to the nun shogun Masako.
Masako understood Tomotoki's feelings, and secretly tried to give Matsushima to Tomotoki, but Matsushima felt that if she married someone else, she would be unfaithful to Yoshihide, to whom she had promised, and if she disobeyed Masako, she would be disloyal.
After much deliberation, Matsushima finally chose to commit suicide.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839 - 92) is a Ukiyo-e artist who was active from the end of the Tokugawa shogunate to Meiji-era.
He had created various types of artworks, and we can see his unique expression styles in each genre of the works.
He was one of the most important and popular Ukiyo-e artists in the Meiji-era and also had a lot of pupils who became famous not only in the Japanese painting field but also western painting field. Sometimes he is called "The last Ukiyo-e artist".
He was also loved by a lot of writers, for instance, Tanizaki Junichiro, Mishima Yukio, and Edogawa Ranpo. The beautiful and fascinating artworks that were kept creating even he was in the mental disorder enthrall people from all around the world.
